In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Tsui Hark Shi Nansheng Film Studio, the classic film "Shanghai Nights" held its Hong Kong premiere at the Museum of Contemporary Visual Culture M+. The premiere ceremony was held grandly on November 8, 2024. Director Tsui Hark and producer Shi Nansheng led the film's creative team Sylvia Chang, Zhong Zhentao and Ye Qianwen to attend. The premiere attracted many well-known directors and actors, including Ann Hui, Wanting Zhang, Xu Chengyi, Lin Zixiang, Shum Jianxun, Teddy Robin, Yu Cheng, Yuan Bin, etc. The atmosphere at the scene was warm, as if going back in time, allowing people to relive an era full of nostalgia. The film premiered in the "Cannes Classics" section of the Cannes International Film Festival earlier. The audience responded very enthusiastically, and there was even thunderous applause at the end of the film! "Shanghai Nights" was shot in 1984. It was the opening film of the film studio founded by Tsui Hark and Shi Nansheng. Tsui Hark served as the director and producer of the film, and Shi Nansheng supervised the production. It starred Sylvia Chang, Zhong Zhentao and Yip Cui-wen, and the soundtrack was composed by the late famous Musician Huang Zhan directs. The film tells the story of a bittersweet love story between a nightclub clown-turned-composer and a singer during the war. The film is set in wartime Shanghai in the 1940s. After being released in Hong Kong that year, the film achieved a box office success of HK$11.63 million. It was nominated for 9 Hong Kong Film Awards the following year, including Best Film and Best Director, earning both box office and word-of-mouth success.
In order to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film's release and hope to let more audiences feel the charm of the film, the film will be screened in limited quantities at Gaoxian Cinema starting from November 18.
